Partnerships and teamwork comprise one of our foundations as an organization. Therefore, we appreciate the collaboration between our mentors and teachers in the schools. Teachers play two significant roles in line with our mission. First, they help us organize mentorship workshops by allowing us to access the students and sometimes arrangements of the meeting venues. Additionally, teachers also help us with feedback on whether our mentorship programs are working and areas that need improvement. For instance, in June 2021, a visit to Adugo, Kayara, Obware, and Akala primary schools reveal that our mentorship programs were one of the sources of encouragement for the class of 2020 KCPE candidates. Mrs. Okoth, the headteacher at Akala primary school, has been a crucial partner in improving the mentorship topics and guiding the group on what is relevant in mentoring the students. She has proposed issues such as teen pregnancy, the role of boys in protecting girls in and out of school, responsible teenagers, and the benefits of choosing an early career path.
Moreover, teachers are our partners in discussing some complicated topics around reproductive health while linking the health information and what is provided in the curriculum. The ministry of education is currently implementing a competency-based curriculum (CBC) that has reached grade 4. The CBC places career mentorship right from pre-primary education at the hands of these teachers. Therefore, we believe that our partnerships and linkages in mentorships will enrich the students with the relevant career information crucial for their career development.
The teachers have also been crucial in distributing sanitary pads to girls and training them how to use them while maintaining the highest hygiene standards. We appreciate the efforts of all teachers in ensuring that sour programs are successful.
